Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean close to the coast of Morocco, the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is an unforgettable travel destination year-round. Known as "The Hawaii Of Europe”, it offers jaw-dropping sights of green mountains, misty forests, plunging waterfalls and azure waters at every turn. It comes to no surprise that #nlgirlfriend and Nieves Lavi Director of Marketing Charlotte jumped at the occasion of escaping to the island with friends for a week…and already dreams of going back!

Here are our top things to do in Madeira for you to discover on your next trip.

WHAT TO DO

HIKING

It’s no secret that hiking is among the favorite activities to do in Madeira. In fact, the island is known to have some of the best hiking trails in the world! Rest assured, even if you’re a beginner, there’s something for everyone. Here are three of our favorites:

1. Pico Do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo
This hike is an absolute must-do in Madeira! It takes you to Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak. The 4-5 hour trek offers breathtaking rewards, with stunning views as you climb above the clouds, giving you the feeling of walking on top of the world.

2. Levada das 25 Fontes
Levadas are narrow water channels carved into the mountains to guide water to the towns below. Today, many of these channels have been transformed into scenic hiking trails, and Levada Das 25 Fontes is one you definitely won’t want to miss!

3. Vereda Do Larano
Winding along cliff edges, this hike is a little more challenging but definitely worth it! Following a coastal path, you will be blown away by dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The best part is it’s less touristy than the others, so you will have the views all to yourself.

RELAX BY THE OCEAN

1. Porto Muniz Natural Pools
This is one of the most popular places to enjoy some well-deserved vitamin-sea. Formed by volcanic lava, these crystal-clear saltwater pools are naturally filled by the ocean. They’re the perfect place to relax, but be warned they do get quite busy!

2. Visit the lidos around Funchal
If you prefer taking a dip in the ocean instead of a pool, we recommend walking along the lido promenade in Funchal. There, you will find public pools with access to the beautiful Atlantic ocean.

3. Seixal’s Black Sand Beach
Seixal Beach is a picturesque beach known for its striking black sand and stunning views of the surrounding cliffs.

VISIT FUNCHAL

1. Old Town
Take an afternoon to get lost in the windy streets of Funchal, which has all the charm of a traditional Portuguese town. You’ll find some of the best restaurants there to taste some of the local food.

2. Monte Palace Gardens
Monte Palace Garden is an oasis away from the city, with an influence of Chinese, Japanese and Mediterranean architecture.

WHERE TO EAT:

The people of Madeira have mastered the art of living off the land and sea. The food is simple yet flavorful, made with fresh local ingredients and most importantly…accompanied by excellent wine! Here are some restaurants that deserve a special mention.

1. Olivia, Funchal
Nestled among the old streets of Funchal, Olivia is a little gastro gem that offers a modern take on Mediterranean cuisine. I highly recommend trying their Octopus!

2. Villa Cipriani
Enjoy a casual moonlit dinner on the terrace of Ristorante Villa Cipriani. Eat delicious Italian food while on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean!

3. Afternoon Tea at Reid’s Palace
Indulge in an afternoon treat with spectacular views at the breathtaking Reid’s Palace, where Winston Churchill escaped to paint and write his memoirs.

4. Petit Fours Patisserie

A favorite amongst locals, we suggest starting every day of your vacation with a trip to this patisserie. You can sit down and enjoy your coffee and pastry while watching the expert bakers at work (p.s: They make the best Portuguese tarts we’ve ever tasted!)
