Botswana's landscape is defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonal floods. The massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with its fossilized river valleys and undulating grasslands, is home to numerous animals including lions elephants giraffes, zebras , leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, red lechwe hyenas and wild dogs.
Botswana is formerly a British protectorate, but was never a colony. It gained independence in 1966. Since then, it has been a republic with a consistent record of uninterrupted democratic elections and the lowest perceived corruption ranking in Africa. It is currently Africa’s oldest continuous democracy.
Another interesting fact is that Botswana is rich with diamonds and has one of the largest diamond mines in the world!
WHERE TO STAY:
Under a canopy of ebony trees, the camp has a chic lounge, library, dining area and luxury tents. It overlooks the Zibadianja Lagoon where the hippos frolic and elephants wander and regularly pass by your tent!
Zarafa camp has the perfect balance of luxury, romance and adventure and has no equal when it comes to its environmental credentials. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction, all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm and a bio-gas system converts vegetable waste into usable cooking gas.
Equipped with the Swarovski binoculars we were supplied, we spent our days taking game drives in Land Cruisers, with our very knowledgeable guide, trying to spot the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.
WHAT TO PACK FOR A SAFARI:
For Game Drives: A pair of cargo pants, our lightweight NIEVES LAVI white shirt and K.Jacques St Tropez flat leather sandals as you will be in the the Jeep. The mornings were chilly so be sure to pack some layers.
Sharon wore her NIEVES LAVI Safari print jumpsuit for the Game drive, and felt comfortable and appropriate! Don't forget some iconic Ray-Ban Wayfarers and our Panama hat to protect from the hot African sun!
WHAT TO WEAR IN THE EVENING:
Cocktail and dinner in the lodge is a casually elegant affair. We wore our Nieves Lavi silk Safari printed dress one night and the Nieves Lavi Batik printed dress to dinner the following, paired with very chic snake embossed K.Jacques St Tropez wedge sandals to complete the look.
